If you’ve made purchases in South Africa and are planning to claim back the VAT (Value Added Tax) from SARS (South African Revenue Service), you’re in luck. As a non-resident visitor, you can claim VAT on goods purchased within the country, provided you follow the correct process and submit the required documents.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on what documents you’ll need and how to prepare for your VAT refund application.

Documents Required for VAT Refund Application:

  1. Postal VAT Application Form
This form is crucial for processing your VAT refund and can be obtained from a VAT Refund Administrator (VRA) agent.
  2. Original Tax Invoices Stamped by Customs
The original invoices for your purchases must be stamped by customs at the point of departure. This is proof that the goods were indeed taken out of South Africa.
Important: If the total purchase amount exceeds R5,000, ensure that your full name, surname, and address are included on the invoice.
  3. Proof of Payment
If the total value of the goods exceeds R10,000, you must also provide proof of payment. This can be a bank statement, credit card slip, or another form of payment verification.
  4. Banking Details
To facilitate the VAT refund, you’ll need to provide your bank account details, including:
    • Your Bank Details (account number, bank name, etc.)
    • Bank Address (the branch’s physical address)
  5. Personal Information
You’ll need to submit a copy of your passport, along with the entry and exit stamps that show your travel dates in and out of South Africa.
  6. Physical Address
A valid physical address is necessary for record-keeping and communication purposes.

Step-by-Step VAT Refund Process:

  1. Gather Your Documents: Ensure all your invoices, proof of payment (if required), and personal identification documents are in order.
  2. Visit Customs: Before leaving South Africa, make sure to have your goods inspected and your original tax invoices stamped by a customs official.
  3. Submit Your Application: Depending on the available options, you can either submit your documents in person or via postal application. Be sure to check with the VRA agents on the best method based on your departure location.
  4. Wait for Processing: Once submitted, Our agents at the head office will process your application and send it to SARS for finalization, and the refund will be deposited into the bank account you provided.
